G.E. Moore famously notes that there's something absurd about saying "I went to the movies, but I don't believe it." It's often claimed that if there's something absurd here, it must arise from the absurdity of the thought or belief expressed by such an utterance. What, if anything, is absurd about mooronic belief? A wide range of diagnoses have been offered. Many miss the mark, however, by entailing that garden-variety epistemic failures are conceptually impossible. I suggest some new constraints on a diagnosis, rule out a few misdiagnoses, and make a suggestion toward a better one.
