Registration and Housing for CogSci97

Registration for the Nineteenth Annual Conference of the Cognitive Science Society includes admission to all conference activities, including four days of parallel speaking sessions and three evenings of receptions, which will be accompanied by poster sessions.

Registration Rates

There is no separate student registration, since some students are well funded and some non-students are poorly funded. Instead, we have aimed for a registration fee ($100) that is uniformly low. To get this rate, you must be a member of the Cognitive Science Society at the time of registration; see the Society web page for information about how to join.

If you are not a Society member, then your rate will be $55 higher than the member rate. However, unless you tell us otherwise, you will also become a member of the Society for one year and you will get all member benefits, including a subscription to the journal Cognitive Science. Also, if you live outside North America, you must pay a $28 airmail fee to cover journal mailing costs. Unless you are a student, you will pay nothing more than you would had you joined the Society earlier and paid the member's rate for the conference.

If you send us your form after the early registration deadline of July 1, 1997, your rate will increase by $30. To ensure that you get the early registration rate, you must submit your electronic form on or before July 1 or send us a hardcopy form by air mail that is postmarked on or before that date. The registration form also includes options for on-campus housing, which we encourage participants to use, since hotel space is very limited in the Stanford area. Please familiarize yourself with these options before filling out the form.

Forms and Payment

You may register for CogSci97 either electronically or in hard copy. If you choose the first option, fill out the electronic registration form, including your mode of payment, then hit the Submit button; your electronic form will automatically be mailed to us for processing. You can pay using a credit card (either Visa or Mastercard) by clicking this option and giving your card number and expiration date. However, if you are concerned about security issues, you may instead send a physical letter with your credit card information (including your signature), or send a check (US dollars only), to the address below.

If you prefer to register in hardcopy format, then download the postscript version of the registration form as a postscript file or the ascii version as a text file, print out the resulting file, fill out the form, and air mail it to:

Cognitive Science 1997
CSLI / Computational Learning Laboratory
Ventura Hall, Stanford University
Stanford, CA 94305 USA
If you are paying by credit card, include information about your card number and expiration date. Otherwise, include with your form a personal or traveler's check (US dollars only) made payable to Stanford University. If you decide to cancel your registration for CogSci97, send email to cogsci97@csli.stanford.edu. If we receive your request on or before July 1, 1997, we will return 90 percent of your funds. We will not be able to reimburse funds for requests made after that date.

On-Campus Housing and Dining

We encourage conference attendees to stay in on-campus housing at Governor's Corner, which is a ten-minute walk from the daytime sessions and directly adjacent to the evening poster sessions. We have arranged two basic packages, both of which assume check in the evening of Wednesday, August 6, the night before the meeting begins. The packages differ in their length, with one assuming check out on Sunday, August 10, the final day of the meeting, and the other assuming check out on Monday, August 11, for people who must stay over Sunday night.

Most of the available spaces are single rooms in four-person or six-person suites with a shared bathroom and lounge. The cost for a single room will be $240 for an August 10 departure and $280 for an August 11 departure. There are also a limited number of shared rooms available in a dormitory with a bathroom down the hall. The individual cost for a shared room will be $192 for an August 10 departure and $233 for an August 11 departure.

Attendees who choose to stay in a single room can arrrive early (with check in either August 4 or 5) for an additional $42 per night, but there will be no early check in for shared rooms. Participants can also stay through the night of August 12, whether they have a single room ($42 per night) or a shared room ($31 per night). There will also be a $70.00 key deposit, which will be returned in exchange for the key at check-out time.

The basic packages come with meals provided for breakfast and lunch, and conference registration fee will cover dinner on August 7, 8, and 9. Meals will not be provided for attendees who arrive early or stay extra nights. However, they will be able to purchase meals at the nearby Florence Moore Dining Hall or at Tressider Student Union.

Off-Campus Housing

We strongly encourage participants to stay in the campus residences, since rooms in local hotels and motels are very difficult to obtain. However, if you decide to stay off campus, please make your reservations early, as your chances of getting a room just before the conference are very low.
