DIRECTIONS TO STANFORD UNIVERSITY The Nineteenth Annual Conference of the Cognitive Science Society will take place from August 7 to 10, 1997, at Stanford University. The daytime parallel sessions will occur near the campus center, in the Main Quad (Buildings 200 and 320) and in the nearby Cummings Art Building. The evening poster sessions and receptions will be in the Governor's Corner complex, located on Santa Teresa Street just off Campus Drive West. You can find these buildings at the Stanford University web site: http://www.stanford.edu/gifs/campus.1620-63-4.gif On-campus housing will also be in Governor's Corner complex. If you need directions there, you can call (415) 723-1521 to reach the Residence Office, which is open from 8 AM (10 AM on weekends) to 10 PM PST. To check into the residences, pull into the parking lot just off Santa Teresa Street, which is labeled with signs for "Elliot Program Center" and "Governor's Corner Conference Office". The service road that runs perpendicular to Santa Teresa will take you past Elliot Program Center, where you will check in. If you arrive after 10 PM, you will need to call (415) 723-1522 to reach the night attendant, who will then check you into your room. Registration will be at Elliot Program Center in Governor's Corner on the evening of Wednesday, August 6, for those staying on campus, and on the patio in front of Cummings Art Building starting at 8:30 AM, Thursday, August 7. For those with cars, parking permits ($2 per day) will be available at the registration desk. The Stanford campus is very large, so make sure you know the specific place you want before going there. Below we give directions to the Main Quad and Governor's Corner, often making reference to Campus Drive, the main road that runs in a circle around the campus. Driving on US 101: Take the Embarcadero Road exit. As you cross El Camino Real, you will enter the campus. Turn right at Campus Drive, then turn left at Palm Drive to reach the Main Quad or left at Santa Teresa (after Campus Drive narrows) to Governor's Corner. Taking the University Avenue exit from US 101 will take you directly to the Main Quad, but you will also have to drive through downtown traffic. Driving on Interstate 280: Take the Alpine Road exist east and turn right onto Junipero Serra Blvd. Turn left at the next traffic light onto Campus Drive, which will take you onto campus. Turn right at Santa Teresa to reach the Governor's Corner complex or (some time after Campus Drive widens) turn right at Palm Drive to reach the Main Quad. From Stanford, you must call and give your name, airline, flight number, and departure time. Cal Train (800) 660-4287 From San Francsico Airport, take the SFO Cal Train Shuttle to Millbrae station, then Cal Train to University Avenue Station in Palo Alto (fare $3). From San Jose Airport, take bus #65 (fare $1.10) to the Santa Clara station. Train fare from Santa Clara Station to University Avenue Station in Palo Alto is $1.50. From the University Avenue depot to Stanford campus, take buses #35 or #300 ($1.10 each trip or $2.20 for a day pass), or take the free Marguerite Shuttle to Stanford during commuter hours Monday through Friday. County bus service: From San Francsico Airport, take bus #7F South to Stanford Shopping Center. This leaves every 30 minutes, takes about 55 minutes, and costs under a dollar. If you arrive at the shopping center during commuter hours Monday through Friday, take the free Marguerite Shuttle (purple line) to the Main Quad or transfer to the SLAC shuttle for Governor's Corner. If you arrive in the evening or on a weekend, you will have a mile's walk to campus. From San Jose Airport on Monday through Friday, take bus #10 North to Benton and El Camino Real; cross the street and take bus #300 to the Stanford Quad, then the SLAC shuttle for Governor's Corner. On weekends, take bus #10 North to Monroe and Franklin; cross the street and take bus #22 to the University Avenue Station in Palo Alto; then take bus #35 to the Stanford Quad.
