Users of interactive environments spend a lot of time performing the same
actions over and over again. In this presentation we will describe
technologies we have developed to design adaptive interfaces that draw on
machine learning to learn a user's habits and afterward offer to complete
repetitive tasks on her behalf. In this framework a key issue is to design
an interface that disrupts the user's work as little as possible and
makes the right suggestion at the right moment. We will focus on that
issue, explaining what makes the difficulties of the learning task and how
we have overcome them. As a case study we will describe an interface agent
we have designed for a programming environment.
